Lighting design and operating

Spell is a Sunday day party created by Vlada and Vaahzer with an experimental approach to music. By almost exclusively using analogue fixtures such as pars and sunstrips, I tied the visual identity of Spell with my own personal visual language - warm, feminine, and theatrical.

Inspiration: dynamic, warm, magical, focus on the music.
Art installations by nanachi (aka Julia Adolphs) and Valentina Schumacher

March 2025

I installed light bulbs, par 56, and sunstrips to enhance the space and the artworks from nanachi and Valentina Schumacher. I placed a viper smoke machine in the ceiling with a plumbing tube leading to the center of the room. I waited until the morning to turn on the smoke, creating a giant cloud above the dancefloor.

December 2025

For this edition, I created three lanterns out of tree branches found at the park across the street. I broke orange plexiglass sheets and stitched them back together with blue yarn to create a lamp shade. The light source came from a halogen orange light bulb inside each lantern.

media: tree branches, plexiglass, yarn, twine, halogen orange light bulbs, par 56, orange filters, sunstrips.

March 2025

I put Julia’s paper maché tree branch sculpture on a disco ball to create a feeling of movement, and added analogue lights and colored strobes. The light fixtures were hung with chains from various heights.

Materials: par 56, par pinspots, sunstrips, cameo thunderwashes, chain.

December 2024

I wanted to bring attention to the beautiful sound system in Sonnenraum, so I installed a par 56 lamp above each of the six speakers in the room. On the two front corners of the room I placed a line of sunstrips to bring attention to the height of the ceiling.

Materials: sunstrips and par 56.

September 2024

This was the first time I worked with Spell, and much of it was me just trying to get to know the space and the event. nanachi and Valentina Schumacher created a sculpture made out of sand and stockings which stretched across the room, and I hung analogue E14 light bulbs from it. I installed several par 56 lights with orange filters for extra warmth and movement.

Materials: par 56, orange filters, E14 refrigerator bulbs
